Thyroid Nodules or Goiter

What are the symptoms?
  • Non-tender enlarging mass in the front and center of the neck below the adam’s apple.
  • Trouble swallowing.
  • Harder to breath when exercising or lying down.
What’s going on behind the scenes?
The primary function of the thyroid gland is to produce thyroid hormone which is responsible for many bodily functions like metabolism, heart rate, temperature control, mood, bowel regularity. This function is evaluated using blood tests. About 7% of the U.S. population have a thyroid nodule and more common in women. This can be felt by hand or found on ultrasound or CT scans. Thyroid nodules generally have no symptoms unless they become > 6 cm or so. Nodules do not usually affect thyroid function
How Tucson ENT can help
We have in-office ultrasound machines to help provide accurate, fine-needle aspiration biopsy of thyroid nodules. If necessary, we will schedule surgery for a partial or total thyroid removal with an operation that uses simultaneous neurologic monitoring of vocal cord function.
