Throat Pain

What are the symptoms?

Pain with swallowing
Pain may go from the throat to the ears
Redness, swelling, and/or white patches in the throat

What’s going on behind the scenes?

As with many other conditions of the head and neck area, allergies and reflux can cause chronic, low-grade throat pain. Pain related to these causes is usually mild, and symptoms may fluctuate. Infectious causes like tonsillitis are usually obvious and resolve with antibiotic treatment within 10 days.

If you have throat pain or pain with swallowing, especially associated with ear pain, progressing and lasting more than 2 weeks, then you must have a complete head and neck examination to rule out concerning pathology.
