What’s going on behind the scenes?
Cancers can affect the sinuses, jaw, tongue, tonsils, throat, voice box. Traditionally, head and neck cancers have been associated with exposure to tobacco or alcohol. Nowadays, head and neck cancer is more often caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV). There are hundreds of strains of HPV, but the most problematic strain is HPV-16. Head and neck cancer is treated using multiple modalities including surgery, chemotherapy, and external beam radiation.
